The Australian Alcohol Guidelines are now being updated
Australian Alcohol Guidelines: health risks and benefits was developed by the NHMRC in collaboration with the Population Health Division of the Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA), with funding from DoHA through the National Safe Use of Alcohol Campaign.
The guidelines were issued by the NHMRC in 2001.
The guidelines are now under review. The review comprises:
- Analysis of the latest literature, and identification of the best available evidence
- Modification and updating of the guidelines where necessary to produce new draft guidelines
- Public consultation
- Consideration of comments received
- Issue of new guidelines by the Chief Executive Officer of the NHMRC
The work is under way, and a 60-day public consultation period is scheduled to begin in early October 2007.
