Cancer Research Urgent Calls for Expression of Interest
The Hon Nicole Roxon MP, Minister for Health and Ageing today announced Australia’s key role in the international fight against cancer. The Government, through the National Health and Medical Research Council, has committed $27.5 million over five years to participate in a consortium of countries studying the disease.
The International Cancer Genome Consortium will coordinate international research efforts to understand DNA changes involved in the major forms of cancer, leading to better diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
Research institutions interested in being involved should submit an Expression of Interest by 29 August 2008.
2009 NICS Fellowships
NICS Fellowships provide an opportunity for future leaders in Australian health care to develop their knowledge and expertise in closing the gaps between evidence and practice. Applications open on 30th August for the 2009 Fellowships.
Nutrition at the NHMRC
NHMRC has updated the nutrition page on the website to include information relating to NHMRC Dietary Guidelines review. Information on topics such as nutrition risk factors, why nutrition is important and NHMRC funding for nutrition research is also available, including easy access to the NHMRC’s nutrition publications.

Public comment on the Diabetes Type 2 Guidelines
Diabetes Australia, together with the NHMRC and the Department of Health and Ageing, is in the process of reviewing the 2001 National Evidence Based Guidelines for the Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
Updated drafts of sections of the Guidelines (Guidelines for the Primary Prevention of Type 2 and Diabetes and Guidelines for Case Detection and Diagnosis of Diabetes Type 2) are now available for public comment until 5pm, Monday September 15, 2008.
