NHMRC – European Union Collaboration Research Program

Grants commencing in 2009

NHMRC has a limited fund to assist Australian participation in projects selected for funding under the European Commission's Seventh Framework program. The health and medical research areas of particular interest to NHMRC are genomics and biotechnology for health.

Grants commencing in 2008

The following programs were successful:

Professor Nick Martin, Queensland Institute of Medical Research
Program ID: 389938
Research to map the genes responsible for causing migraines. Professor Martin is internationally recognised in his field for using twins and families to investigate genetic traits.
Funding: $439,124

Professor Georges Grau, University of Sydney
Program ID: 512101
Research to investigate cerebral malaria, a life-threatening complication of infection caused by parasites. The project aims to study the characteristics of the endothelial micro-particles released during cerebral malaria, in relation to clinical symptoms, disease severity and disease outcome.
Funding: $250,000

On 5 July 2006, the Minister for Ageing, the Hon Santo Santoro MP, announced the six successful grant recipients under the Ageing Well, Ageing Productively funding scheme, a joint NHMRC - ARC initiative.

International Collaborative Research Grants

The International Collaborative Research Grants (ICRG) Scheme is a partnership between the Wellcome Trust, the NHMRC and the Health Research Council (HRC) of New Zealand. The total monetary award was AUD$29,204,420 over a period of five years, of which NHMRC contributed AUD$11,154,808.

Preventive Healthcare and Strengthening Australia’s Social and Economic Fabric Strategic Award

On 18 October 2006, the Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon. Tony Abbott announced $9.7 million in funding for eight innovative projects focusing on social, economic and environmental factors impacting on the health and wellbeing of Australians.  The grants cover areas such as wellbeing in early childhood, obesity, breaking cycles of poor health and disadvantage, and environmental factors in disease prevention.
